Direct dyes

Direct dyes are used on cotton, paper, leather, wool, silk and nylon. They are also used as pH indicators and as biological stains. Besides, direct dyes are used in low-priced viscose or blended curtain fabrics, furnishings and carpets.
Direct dyes are used on cellulosic fibers when good lightfastness is needed, but washfastness is not critical. This includes window coverings, upholstery, and heavy bedding where the finished item is seldom washed or is labeled as dryclean only. Wetfastness can be improved by treatment of the yarn with resin finishes or by resin treatment of the cloth after weaving, but will never equal that of reactive or vat dyes.
The major advantages of direct dyes over other classes used for cellulose are better lighffastness than most reactive dyed shades, ease of application, shortness of the dye cycle (around 3 hr for package dyeing), and overall low cost of the dyes themselves and the auxiliaries used. In addition, water use is usually lower because wash up after dyeing is not extensive and effluent salt levels are much lower than most reactive dyeings.
